You

People seek the help of a psychologist in response to a range of feelings and situations, and use therapy in a variety of ways. Some of the following statements may apply to you.

  • This may be a tough time, with a more distressing life situation and more difficult feelings than you've ever had. You may feel worried, anxious, or overwhelmed.
  • You might be thinking about therapy or counseling for the first time, not knowing how it would be. You might have been considering it for awhile, wondering if now is the time.
  • Maybe you have had therapy before, but are looking for something a little different.
  • You may be a problem solver, seeking to bring a new resource to your life. You could get through this on your own, but maybe could partner with someone to do it more quickly.
  • You could be experiencing something quite specific and difficult—a recent loss, a problem in an important relationship, a move, a problem at work, a family issue, a divorce or death, loneliness, a medical problem, a trauma. Or, several of these things could have piled up during the same time period.
  • A particular symptom may be bothering you and getting in your way—periods of high anxiety, anger you don't quite understand, fears or behavior that feel “compulsive”, difficulty with your eating or with feelings about your body, feeling “down” or depressed, lack of self confidence.
  • You might have realized that you have some patterns that are getting in your way, and you're ready for change.
  • You sense that “unfinished business” from your past or childhood still haunts you and keeps you from a full realization of life possibilities.
  • Maybe you feel that your personal or career life is not on the path you would wish, and you'd like to explore and shift some things. Alternatively, you may have created a life for yourself that should be satisfying, and you're still not feeling good enough.
  • You may be experiencing difficult feelings that you don't understand well enough at all.
  • Your emotions or life situation might not fit the usual categories. You wonder if you could benefit from talking with someone, not directly involved in your life, who might listen well and with confidentiality and help you to understand and deal with your unique self and circumstances.
